Grazing grounds and watering holes in the capital of cool

Grazing grounds and watering holes in the capital of cool

From cracking brunches to hip evening hangouts and late-night nibbles from across the globe, Berlin’s got it all. Here are a few of MT’s favourites from our recent trip to this beautiful city.

Allan’s Breakfast Club & Wine Bar

facebook.com/allansbreakfastclub | Rykestrasse 13

ABC’s Eggs Benny are the stuff of dreams. This friendly French-Aussie spot’s all about kicking back with a book and whiling away a weekend in the city.  Pick a perch outside in the sunshine and sip coffee on the cobbles after a perusal of the fabulous St George’s English Bookshop around the corner, or pop in around sunset for a glass (or more) of wine and chilled chats. This is people-watching at its best — with great food & drinks to boot.

Café Neundrei

neundrei.com | Monbijouplatz 2

Stop in for a smoothie — a marvellous, made-to-order, herby, fresh, fruit-filled glass of goodness with a dash of spice — and stay for the delicious, banana and honey-topped porridge. Whether you have time to recline with a coffee or need to grab your oats and dash, this is a breakkie worth waking up for. Top it all off by coming back in the afternoon for cake. Why not?

East & Eden

eastandeden.com | Torstrasse 141

Danish design meets fantastic fare at this trendy eatery. Settle in for a cappuccino-fuelled afternoon’s work with your laptop, meet a mate for a stellar superfood sandwich, or raid the tiny crockery sales section to kit your flat out in true Scandinavian style.

Café CK

cafeckberlin.com | Marienburger Strasse 49

This little spot is the ideal stop off on a day of contemplating concept store curiosities. Outdoor perches make ideal spots for surveying the comings and goings of the bustling street, fresh ginger tea in hand. Seek a sofa-based hiding place to sip a lovely latte or nibble the latest bake. Plus, staff are super friendly and the vibe is very chilled.

Kontor Eismanufaktur

facebook.com/ZeitfuerEis | Danziger Strasse 65

Cut the cream and try a summer cooler with a twist. Kontor Eismanufaktur’s vegan ice creams are so much more than your average sorbet. Fun, funky flavours such as Salted Caramel with Popcorn and Spicy Pumpkin are made with coconut or almond milk to give them a healthy richness. Pile ‘em up on your cone and saunter down the street feeling über-healthy (sort of) in the sunshine.

La Buvette

labuvette.berlin | Gleimstrasse 41

Wine not? A recent move means that floorspace (and table space) here has doubled. Grab a seat and enjoy a warm Gallic welcome as you peruse the wonderful wine list. Help for the uninitiated is on hand, the salty snacks go down a treat and the assiettes of meat and cheese to share make a perfect appetiser to kick off a night to remember — unless the wine flows too freely, of course…

Chutnify

chutnify.com | Sredzkistrasse 43

A south-Indian street food outpost buzzing with late-night taste-seekers, Chutnify is a tantalising portal into the incomparable cuisine of modern India. Start with the sharp and sweet cocktails: Indian spices meet tangy spirits to create wonderful, unique drinks, ideally-suited to the bright and vibrant decor of this unusual eatery. Well-watered, select your dosa carefully: these savoury pancakes come with a variety of fillings and assorted chutneys — of both the mild and impossibly fiery tongue-tingling sort. Dip, roll and come back for more.

Omoni

facebook.com/Omoni | Kopenhagener Strasse 14

Easy-to-miss-Omoni displays only its logo, and not its name, on the door, yet this cosy corner is often jam-packed. Regale yourself with marvellous miso soup, fabulous platters of sashimi — made up of great fresh fish, which locals suggest is sometimes hard to come by in the city — and tuck in to rolls of ace sushi. Service is super-efficient, and the fresh fruit-and-herb teas are to die for.

Onkel Ho

onkel-ho.net | Gleimstrasse 10A

A taste of Vietnam, an entire world away: Onkel Ho hums with the spirit of Southeast Asia. Tiger in hand and huge bowl of phở bò before us, we were transported straight back to Saigon – minus the maniacal motorbikes. OK, so it’s not quite the real thing, but it’s the closest you’ll get in mainland Europe; it certainly left us emerging into the crisp evening air feeling warm and melancholic.

The Bird

thebirdinberlin.com | Am Falkplatz 5

Craving a burger? This is the real, all-American deal – or, at least, as close as you can get in Berlin. Grab a spot at one of the shared benches outside, or head towards the bar for a night out in the U.S. of A. There’s no shortage of burger and steak varieties to choose from, nor beers to wash them down with. Look out for lively event nights.
